Topic: HELP needed from German family Neubronner's

I am not involved very much with home-educating families in outher countries, but here is one i think is worthy of note. I remember the Melissa case (search in the Forum for "Melissa" and you will see).
So, i cross-post this message from the yahoo-group Learning Unlimited (this means it is trustworthy):

Dear friends,
We received a new penalty payment. We are supposed to pay 4,500 euro now, if our children do not visit school from 5th of November on. We will not pay this and we will not force our children to school. The authority then can

1. send police to our house to have them bring the children to school. The authority said that they will not do this, especially since we already brought our children to school ourselves several times (without forcing them to stay there) and this violence agianst the kids would be scandalized in the media. Very unlikely.
2. send a bailiff/marshal to our house or garnish our accounts. We don't own seizable possessions of worth, so they would have to go to step 3 or 4
3. encumber our house with a mortgage, which could then lead to a forced sale. This is a very lengthy process, and in the end we could pay the penalty payment until 1 minute before the forced sale starts. Possible, but unlikely.
4. send us to jail for coercive arrest. (Usually only the father is taken away from the family for a few days). This would be scandalized by the media, too. They would hate to do it, but perhaps will have to. Tilman is ready to go to jail for a few days or weeks, because this would bring the issue into the media und would cause a national, maybe international discussion.
Our options now are to hold on to our children's right to learn freely and to take the risks mentioned, or to deregister from Germany and move our permanent residence abroad. The latter would mean that all legal processes would loose their subject and there was no chance to change the situation in Germany. Therefore we decided to take the risk and stay.

But we need support in regard to the penalty payment, especially since the authorities deny us legal aid. We have appealed at the constitution court against this (denying us legal aid because "missing prospect of success"), but do not know how the decision will be.
So we will definitely loose 4,500 euro OR Tilman will be in jail for several days or weeks, which means loss of earnings. We already have a loss of earnings now, of course, because a lot of time is "lost" (or well invested...) we are not able to work but to write appeals, statements, letters, articels, give interviews and so on.
Therefore we are grateful if you spread the news of this.

Re: HELP needed from German family Neubronner's

Senaste nytt:

Here is an excerpt from the Neubronners' press conference on Friday (with their lawyer's introductory comments). The Neubronners have been on an emotional roller-coaster this weekend. After a judgement of the Federal Court was made public in a press release, Dagmar felt extremely uneasy, because this implied that homeschooling per se is a serious endangerment of children's welfare. In the past, the school authorities in Bremen have been prompted by negative media reports about homeschooling in general into taking action against the Neubronners.

Fearing that the police would arrive at their door that very night as part of a cloak-and-dagger operation to remove the children from their custody, Dagmar sent them to sleep over with friends. Tilman was attending choir practice for the big performance of the cathedral choir inwhich he sings. Later they discussed the issue together and decided that the only option for them was to force the boys to attend school, so their accounts would be unblocked, put their house on the market and move their business to Austria. When the boys heard about this state of affairs the next morning, they were bitterly upset, both at being forced to go to school and having to leave their beloved Bremen and their extended family and friends.

This morning the boys duly went off to school, facing the miserable prospect of spending the next few months unable to exercise their cherished educational freedom. Then, in a sudden turn of events, the Neubronners' lawyer, Matthias Westerholt, called them and told them that he had spoken to a judge who was responsible for custody issues. Last week, the lawyer had submitted a "Schutzschrift", an application blocking the State from removing custody from the parents without them being given a hearing in court first. The decision ofthe Federal Court does not invalidate this block. Thus the Neubronners do not have to fear any sudden loss of custody, such as happened in the case of Melissa Busekros. Consequently they have removed their house from Ebay again and the boys will be able to stay home from tomorrow. This means that their accounts are still blocked and they are relying from support from other people while they continue their case. But at least Thomas and Moritz can continue learning at home.

I had an idea this morning and I want to ask you all to spread it to your various home education email lists and put it on your blogs. Someone on a German attachment parenting list mentioned that she was sending the German Senator for Education a lovely postcard and it made me think that we could send her postcards from all over the world. Imagine if she receives postcards from Taiwan or Thailand or Russia or New Zealand, etc. etc.

The message on the postcard could read:
"Liebe Frau Jürgens-Pieper, mitschönen Grüssen von Familie [your surname] aus bildungsfreie [name of your country, state or town, or all three]"

If your children want to get involved, they can write their own postcard, with their name and age instead of "Familie [your surname]"

And if you send Christmas cards out to all and sundry, how about putting Frau Jürgens-Pieper on your Christmas card list this year. You could send her a card with the message:
"Liebe Frau Jürgens-Pieper, Frohe Weihnachten, In der Hoffnung, dass es bis nächste Weihnachten in Bremen Bildungsfreiheit gibt. Mit schönen Grüssen von [names in family]"
(English translation: Merry Christmas, in the hope that educational freedom exists in Bremen by next Christmas)

Her address is as follows: Senatorin für Bildung und Wissenschaft, Rembertiring 8-12, 28195 Bremen.

Letters are time-consuming to write and finding the right tone is often difficult. However it's not much effort to quickly write a little message on the back of a postcard or a Christmas card. I think Frau Jürgens-Pieper will get the message more effectively if she's deluged with postcard from all corners of the world.

Re: HELP needed from German family Neubronner's

More news today, that they:

...received a letter from the Bremen Education authorities today, in which they are fined another 3000 euros, 1500 each for her and her husband, Tilman. This is on top of the other 4 500 euro's worth of fines they have received, and which the authorities did not yet collect (their accounts were unfrozen without any money being removed from them for the fines, just an administrative charge of 93 euros from the fiscal department).

The letter also threatens that if their sons do not attend school, other coercive measures will be taken against them.
